The Most Aggressive Jersey Goes to RecoveryDoc Athlete Bobbie Traksel

Bobbie Traksel of Team Champion Systems Pro Cycling has taken hold of the most aggressive jersey title in Oman.

This is a great success for Team Champion Systems which aims to hold onto the jersey, “we are all focused on helping Bobbie keep the combative jersey,” Friedemann said. We are certainly happy after this great victory which occurred following the training camp, where Dr. Rick Rosa worked with the team on their sports recovery, strength and endurance. “This is a great start for the season for me,” Traksel said. “These races were great preparation for me and I’m feeling very good about my new position on the Champion System team.” Dr. Rick Rosa works with a number of athletes in his sports recovery program, RecoveryDoc, these athletes include Team Jamis Sutterfield, Tony Thompson boxer, Keystone Boxing, Team Lloyd Irvin, high school, college leagues and more.

To achieve success, Dr. Rosa utilizes his signature Six Pillars of Recovery program for athletes which encompass all aspects of healing. The Six Pillars include:
  • Awareness of State
  • Rest
  • Play
  • Nutrition
  • Physical
  • Psychological
This comprehensive approach enables a more complete healing process that will prevent further injuries as well as speed up recovery between workouts. Athletes respond better when a coach is able to map out a specific workout. Similarly, doctors are able to map out and monitor specific plans that the athlete can follow. In addition, the athlete will become more aware of his/her recovery state and when he/she has fully recovered. The athlete can put that much more into his/her workouts which will ultimately improve the performance. Would you like to see Dr. Rosa in action with the team? Here is a video you’ll love taken in China, where he worked as the Champion Systems Recovery Specialist and Sports Chiropractor. What Kind Of Exercises Should You Do?

Just today in my Chiropractic office in Germantown a patient asked me "What kind of exercises should I do?"

My response started with, "What are you doing now?".  What followed was typical of 95% of patients that asked me this question: "Nothing".

OK, I understand that you have been in pain, so you haven't wanted to exercise, often for years, but this question could be incredibly complicated or simple.  Now in my experience complicated usually leads to inactivity.  If there is too much on the table, then people have the tendency to do nothing, and will continue NOT to exercise.  I try to keep things simple especially for those that it has been a long time since they exercised and they are at least 50 lbs overweight, because these are the people most likely to give up on an exercise routine.

The first thing to do is move, and keep moving, get out there and walk.

Inevitably, I'll get the response I walk everyday: going to the grocery store, from my work parking lot into my building, at the Mall.  OK, I get it, short episodes of walking relatively short distances, often with starting and stopping.  No, no, no.  I want you to walk with the intent to walk.  I want you to walk without stopping for at least 20 minutes.  Get that heart rate up if you can.  Over time walk further.  If you are having too much pain to walk 20 minutes, then start with 10, and then go home and ice yourself, but do something.  Not only will the exercise do you good, but movement inhibits pain.  The is the way we were created and hard wired.  So you will end up with multiple health benefits.

So get out there and move.

We can always make things more complicated later, but start with the simple stuff, and start to create healthful habits.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis.

An estimated 27 million Americans live with it according to the Arthritis Foundation. And because it's two major risk factors: aging and obesity, are so prevalent among the baby-boomer generation, the number of people with OA is predicted to exceed 60 million by 2020.  Osteoarthritis causes cartilage and joints to degenerate over time.  Recently, researchers at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center identified a specific protein that appears to play a key role in translating cartilage and joint damage into the pain that Osteoarthritis suffers feel.

Osteoarthritis can start to affect the joints before symptoms like stiffness and pain become apparent. By that time, joint damage may have already become advanced an pain may be triggered by such things as climbing stairs.  Eventually, pain may even be caused by touch or pressure. and eventually even at rest.

Research Says

Researchers conducted a 16-week-long study in mice that attempted to simulated the slow, chronic progression of osteoarthritis  in humans. They monitored the nerves that carry signals from the sensory organs to the brain and found that a protein known as monocyte chemoattractant protein or (MCP)-1 (CCL2) and its receptor are central to feeling OA pain.  When researchers elevated the levels of this protein in one group of mice with simulated OA and the mice exhibited signs that they were experiencing pain. Another group of mice with simulated knee degeneration, but without the protein, did not exhibit the pain-avoidance behaviors.

Now instead of looking at why this process starts, the cartilage beginning to degenerate, these researchers will be looking for a drug so that you cannot feel the pain, but do nothing to help the reason behind the pain.  As I stated before the two biggest factors contributing to OA are obesity and aging. Now we are all getting older, so we can't do anything about aging, but obesity we can.  We all need to eat better, and exercise.  Take supplements, such as glucosamine and chondrotin sulfate, be proactive, even getting adjusted by your Chiropractor can help keep you more mobile.  Don't wait until you have OA to do something about it, but start now to try to minimize it, or better yet, not suffer from it at all.

What Should my Expectations Be?

What Should My Expectations Be?

Today in my Germantown office a patient whom if have treated off and on probably for a decade asked me, "What should my expectations be?"  He was essentially asking why he wasn't instantly better after he last appointment.  I told him that his expectations were too high.

This patient has come in for care on an as needed basis like I said for probably a decade or so.  The last time I saw him was a year and a half ago.  Typically he would come in, receive therapy, get adjusted, and feel almost instantly back to normal.  I would typically see him two to four times a year.  He responded great!

I love when a patient gets better fast.  I have an ego, and I like to think I'm good at what I do, so when a patient is better quickly, and tells you how much better they feel there is a certain amount of affirmation in that.

Getting Better Quickly

Now unfortunately not everyone gets better quickly.  This particular patient is not the person he was when I initially started treating him.  He is now married, with three kids, in his forties, and gained some weight, like we all seem to do in our forties.  As we get older, we don't tend to heal as quickly.  That is not to say it doesn't happen, but generally it takes more time.

As far as expectations go, I would estimate about 40% of patients will have a great response after one visit.  That doesn't necessarily mean no more pain, but feel a good level of improvement.  The other 60% takes time.  That doesn't mean that I am going to be treating you every week for the rest of your life, but you may need care a couple of times a week for 3-4 weeks.  Not forever.

Recommended Therapy Schedule

Now with this patient, I recommended just that approach.  Let's go after the pain on a regular basis for a few weeks until he feels better, and then hopefully his body will remember how it is suppose to feel.  At that point he may begin to again respond quickly and with any future episodes, and be a treated once and feel good type of patient again.
