Could there be a Better Treatment?

On April 8th, The Washington Post had an article in it referring to two major local hospitals that were looking to spend tens of millions of dollars for new cancer treatment facilities.  Sounds great right?  Both hospitals want to put the same treatment center in though, which means one, both, or neither of them may get approval.  They both want attempting to establish center that use proton beam therapy, which is a new cutting edge radiation treatment.  It has the ability to more precisely target tumors then conventional radiation treatments, which should make it safer for healthy tissues.

The only problem is that it has not been proven to be better then cheaper alternatives for some cancers. It has a great deal of potential but so far lacks the data.  So why spend these millions on an unproven facility?  Well, the Post answered that:  A patient who has prostate cancer and is treated with the proton beam therapy will be paid by Medicare $32,000, whereas for conventional radiation it is less then $19,000.  So, could it be about the money?   As an unidentified executive in the Post said, "The hospitals make a ton of money".

So why do I care if it could be a better treatment.  It is because not all treatments that are more expensive are better.  I am currently treating a patient whom had been through the ringer for his neck pain.  MRIs, physical therapy, cortisone injections, and surgery is on the table as well. But what works for him, giving him the relief he needs, is Chiropractic care.  The least expensive of his options.  Unfortunately, his insurance company does not want to cover any more care as he has reached his "lifetime time limit" of $1000.  The would have no problem paying for more physical therapy, cortisone shots or even multiple surgeries, but heaven forbid they pay for what works inexpensively.

Maybe, just maybe, we need more common sense when it comes to treating patients.

Feng Wins King of the Mountains Jersey at Taiwan

getimageFeng Wins King of the Mountains Jersey at Taiwan

Champion System Pro Cycling Team's Chun Kai Feng took home top honors in the king of the mountains classification Sunday at the Tour de Taiwan after securing and protecting the jersey since Friday's Stage 5.
Champion System Assistant Director Chris Wherry said he was proud of the team's overall effort to preserve the jersey in a race that saw Zach Bell win Stage 4 and teammate Adiq Othman earn four top five finishes, including fifth on the final stage.
"I am very pleased for the team," Wherry said. "Especially for Zach's stage win and Kai's KOM jersey."
With no categorized climbs on the final stage, a 58-kilometer circuit race through Taipei City, as Feng needed only to finish the race to secure the jersey. When a breakaway failed to materialize, the intermediate sprints turned into field sprints. Othman took third in the first and was runner-up on the second.
Rain started to fall as the peloton hit the final lap, and what looked to be a perfect lead out by Champion System for Fabian Schnaidt was ruined in a crash with two corners to go.
"I'm very bummed at the lost opportunity," Schnaidt said. "I thought I was going to have a great finish."
Hayato Yoshida (Shimano Racing Team) took the win ahead of Benjamin Giraud (Team La Pomme Marsielle). Othman's fifth place added to his fourth on Stage 3, fifth on Stage 5 and third on Stage 6. He finished the race as Champion System's best-placed rider overall in 11th, 47 seconds behind winner Bernard Sulzberger (DRAPAC Cycling).

The Most Aggressive Jersey Goes to RecoveryDoc Athlete Bobbie Traksel

Bobbie Traksel of Team Champion Systems Pro Cycling has taken hold of the most aggressive jersey title in Oman.

This is a great success for Team Champion Systems which aims to hold onto the jersey, “we are all focused on helping Bobbie keep the combative jersey,” Friedemann said. We are certainly happy after this great victory which occurred following the training camp, where Dr. Rick Rosa worked with the team on their sports recovery, strength and endurance. “This is a great start for the season for me,” Traksel said. “These races were great preparation for me and I’m feeling very good about my new position on the Champion System team.” Dr. Rick Rosa works with a number of athletes in his sports recovery program, RecoveryDoc, these athletes include Team Jamis Sutterfield, Tony Thompson boxer, Keystone Boxing, Team Lloyd Irvin, high school, college leagues and more.

To achieve success, Dr. Rosa utilizes his signature Six Pillars of Recovery program for athletes which encompass all aspects of healing. The Six Pillars include:
  • Awareness of State
  • Rest
  • Play
  • Nutrition
  • Physical
  • Psychological
This comprehensive approach enables a more complete healing process that will prevent further injuries as well as speed up recovery between workouts. Athletes respond better when a coach is able to map out a specific workout. Similarly, doctors are able to map out and monitor specific plans that the athlete can follow. In addition, the athlete will become more aware of his/her recovery state and when he/she has fully recovered. The athlete can put that much more into his/her workouts which will ultimately improve the performance. Would you like to see Dr. Rosa in action with the team? Here is a video you’ll love taken in China, where he worked as the Champion Systems Recovery Specialist and Sports Chiropractor. What Kind Of Exercises Should You Do?

Just today in my Chiropractic office in Germantown a patient asked me "What kind of exercises should I do?"

My response started with, "What are you doing now?".  What followed was typical of 95% of patients that asked me this question: "Nothing".

OK, I understand that you have been in pain, so you haven't wanted to exercise, often for years, but this question could be incredibly complicated or simple.  Now in my experience complicated usually leads to inactivity.  If there is too much on the table, then people have the tendency to do nothing, and will continue NOT to exercise.  I try to keep things simple especially for those that it has been a long time since they exercised and they are at least 50 lbs overweight, because these are the people most likely to give up on an exercise routine.

The first thing to do is move, and keep moving, get out there and walk.

Inevitably, I'll get the response I walk everyday: going to the grocery store, from my work parking lot into my building, at the Mall.  OK, I get it, short episodes of walking relatively short distances, often with starting and stopping.  No, no, no.  I want you to walk with the intent to walk.  I want you to walk without stopping for at least 20 minutes.  Get that heart rate up if you can.  Over time walk further.  If you are having too much pain to walk 20 minutes, then start with 10, and then go home and ice yourself, but do something.  Not only will the exercise do you good, but movement inhibits pain.  The is the way we were created and hard wired.  So you will end up with multiple health benefits.

So get out there and move.

We can always make things more complicated later, but start with the simple stuff, and start to create healthful habits.
